For your consideration a Kalamazoo built Epiphone FT 30, 1961
This all mahogany guitar is the sister too the Gibson LG0 and was built on the same production line. However, it differs substantially from most 1960s Epiphone FT30s. By 1963-64 Gibson would settle on the elongated dove wing headstock for the Epiphones and a narrow/rounded neck profile for both the FT30 and FT35. In 1963 Gibson also settled on a belly bridge with an economy adjustment feature for the Gibson and Epiphone guitars. This was seen by many as a step in the wrong direction.
The 1961-62 guitars have the smaller more proportional dove wing head stock and a neck profiles familiar and comfortable to the modern player. The FT30 being offered has those features with a serial number supporting 1961 delivery date. The serial number is found on both the headstock and sound hole Gibson label.
The headstock is the shorter “sloped dove wing” and the neck is wider by several 32nds at the nut with a shallower “C” neck profile. The width and profile are very comfortable. It also has a rectangular rosewood. bridge and an unlabeled pick guard. These features along with the tuners all support the 1961 Epiphone FT30 assignment. All appear to be original. The top may have over been sprayed. The back and sides show some checking.
It looks to have its original nut and saddle and has very good action 4/64 B and 3/64 T. It plays cleanly over the entire neck.
This guitar has bumps and bruises consistent with its 70 yrs but no cracks or breaks. It long ago had a back brace reglued and while not the prettiest work, is stabile. All things considered the guitar is in VG condition and is a great player.
The tone is that if a ladder braced mahogany guitar that fits a unique niche in a sound mix. It is equip with a K&N pickup.
This guitar has a unique history, and it is a guitar you just don’t want to put down. Fun to play and great tone.
